ZANE GREY'S WEST SOCIETY
ZANE GREY'S WEST SOCIETY
Zane Grey, the Western writer, shaped the way the world will forever perceive the "Old West." Zane Grey's name on theater marquees was a bigger draw than the top Hollywood stars of his day. In 57 novels, 10 books of Western nonfiction, and 130 movies, Grey, who died in 1939 at age 67, almost single-handedly created the "Myth of the West." His respectful treatment of Indians was ahead of its time; his word paintings of some of the world’s most spectacular country may never be equaled.
Grey celebrated the natural beauty of the West and the character and frontier values of its people - the so-called Code of the West. In1983, the Zane Grey’s West Society was formed. The Society promotes interest in and knowledge of Zane Grey and his works and strives to revive interest in the writings of Zane Grey and preserve the sites of his writings so future generations can realize the contributions made by Zane Grey toward the development of the adventure story in American literature.
Terry Bollinger is President of the Zane Grey’s West Society. He’ll give a broad-stroke description of Zane Grey and his influence on and by the Colorado Plateau.
Harvey Leake is descended from the Wetherill family, famously known for their work in Kayenta. Trained and employed as an electrical engineer, Harvey is a relentless researcher on the Colorado Plateau and prolific essayist. Harvey will discuss Grey’s 1929 trip to Utah and Arizona. Grey visited the Dirty Devil River, Natural Bridges, Grand Canyon, Havasupai, Rainbow Bridge, and more.
